Israel Deploys New Armored Audi A8 Limousines for Top Officials Including Netanyahu

Israel has recently acquired eight new armored Audi A8 Security limousines designed to transport high-profile officials such as the Prime Minister, President, and Shin Bet personnel. These vehicles are intended for securely conveying visiting heads of state and senior ministers with heightened security alerts. The limousines have already entered operational use, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recorded traveling in one ahead of a visit to the Malha Mall in Jerusalem. Each limousine costs approximately three million shekels, marking a significant investment.

Four of the new limousines were allocated to the Prime Minister’s Office for Netanyahu’s use, two were assigned to the President’s Office for President Isaac Herzog, and two were given to the Shin Bet for various security needs. According to the vehicle management authority, these cars require replacement every four years. The previous fleet, in service since 2018, was delayed in replacement due to the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing conflicts, resulting in substantial wear and tear, especially from the heavy armor.

The older vehicles have logged hundreds of thousands of kilometers and incurred high maintenance costs, partly due to the strain the heavy armor places on the engine. The new limousines feature unique Israeli security adaptations requested by the Shin Bet, including enhanced protection against diverse terror threats such as chemical attacks. They are equipped with systems to filter toxic gases and an integrated communication system allowing occupants to lock themselves inside securely. The vehicles are resistant to gunfire from light weapons and roadside explosives.

In addition to security upgrades, the limousines maintain luxury features such as a refrigerator, special leather upholstery, and wood paneling. Representatives from the vehicle management authority and Shin Bet oversee the upgrades and installations at Audi’s factories in Germany. Passengers have noted that the heavy armor makes the interior quite cramped despite the luxury fittings.
