Russell Westbrook Announces Retirement After 18 Seasons in NBA

Russell Westbrook, one of the most iconic players of his generation, announced his retirement from the NBA at age 37 on Wednesday. He shared the news through a clever video on his Instagram account, marking the end of an 18-season career. Westbrook was selected fourth overall in the 2008 NBA Draft by the Seattle SuperSonics just before the franchise relocated to Oklahoma City, where he became a defining figure for the Thunder and a symbol of the triple-double era.

Westbrook’s peak years were with the Oklahoma City Thunder, where he played alongside Kevin Durant and James Harden and reached the NBA Finals in 2012. After Durant’s departure, Westbrook emerged as the team’s undisputed leader, delivering a historic 2016-17 season with averages of 31.6 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 10.4 assists per game, earning the NBA MVP award. He was the first player since Oscar Robertson to average a triple-double for a full season and repeated this feat three more times.

Since leaving Oklahoma City in 2019, Westbrook played for several teams including the Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, Denver Nuggets, and finally the Sacramento Kings. In his final season, he averaged 15.2 points, 6.7 assists, and 5.4 rebounds over 64 games. He also became only the second player in NBA history, after LeBron James, to reach 25,000 points and 10,000 assists.

Westbrook’s career is distinguished by nine All-Star selections, nine All-NBA team honors, two scoring titles, three assists titles, and inclusion in the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team. He retires as the all-time leader in triple-doubles, a testament to his extraordinary athleticism and unique playing style. Recent reports had linked Westbrook with a potential move to Hapoel Tel Aviv, and his retirement from the NBA could increase the likelihood of his joining the Israeli club.
