Russell Westbrook Announces Retirement After 18 Seasons in NBA

After weeks of speculation about a possible move to Europe, including interest from Hapoel Tel Aviv, American point guard Russell Westbrook announced his retirement from the NBA on Wednesday, concluding an illustrious 18-season career. Westbrook shared his decision through a special video narrated by actor Michael B. Jordan. Throughout his career, he played for several teams including Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, Denver Nuggets, and Sacramento Kings.

In his final season with Sacramento, Westbrook appeared in 64 games, starting 58, and averaged 15.2 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 6.7 assists per game. Despite the team's struggles, he remained a key locker room presence and provided valuable experience to the young roster. During this season, he continued to make NBA history by surpassing Steve Nash and Mark Jackson to become fifth on the all-time assists list, becoming the first guard to exceed 9,000 career rebounds, and adding six more triple-doubles to reach a record total of 209.

Westbrook's career achievements include winning the NBA MVP award in 2017, nine All-Star selections, two scoring titles, nine All-NBA team honors, and leading the league in assists three times. He finished with career totals of 27,176 points, 9,025 rebounds, and 10,351 assists. Alongside LeBron James, he is one of only two players in NBA history to surpass 25,000 points and 10,000 assists.
