Hapoel Tel Aviv Explores Signing NBA Veteran Russell Westbrook for 2026/27 Season

Hapoel Tel Aviv is actively building its roster for the 2026/27 basketball season and has emerged as a potential destination for NBA veteran Russell Westbrook. According to multiple European reports, Hapoel Tel Aviv, along with Panathinaikos and a Dubai team, are monitoring Westbrook's situation as he remains a free agent. The 37-year-old point guard, who was the NBA MVP in the 2016/17 season, recently completed a year with the Sacramento Kings, averaging 15.2 points, 6.7 assists, and 5.4 rebounds over 76 games. However, journalist Jake Fischer from Bleacher Report noted that the Kings do not plan to offer Westbrook a new contract.

A move to Europe would mark Westbrook's first professional experience outside the NBA, a significant development given his extensive career. Known for his exceptional athleticism and ability to generate fast-break points, Westbrook has played over 1,200 regular-season NBA games. His career includes stints with Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards (where he played alongside Israeli player Deni Avdija), Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, Denver Nuggets, and Sacramento Kings. Westbrook is a nine-time NBA All-Star, former league MVP, and holds the record for most career triple-doubles, having averaged a triple-double for four seasons. He is also recognized among the NBA's 75 greatest players.

Currently, Westbrook is expected to continue seeking an NBA contract. Only if he fails to secure a deal in the United States might a move to Europe become a realistic option, potentially making a significant impact in the EuroLeague.
