Health Ministry Finds Deliberate Failures in Illegal Compassionate-Use Treatment at Mayanei HaYeshua
A Health Ministry investigation has concluded that staff involved at Mayanei HaYeshua Hospital in Bnei Brak acted with “deliberate” failures in a case from seven years ago involving an 84-year-old man with advanced pancreatic cancer. The patient was given a substance that had not been approved for use in humans as part of an illegal “compassionate treatment” arrangement.
The committee said it could not determine with certainty whether the substance worsened the man’s condition. He died several weeks later.
According to the ministry, possible measures against those involved are now being considered. The findings focus on the conduct of the hospital personnel in connection with the unauthorized treatment, rather than on a definitive causal link between the substance and the patient’s death.
