Israel Prepares New Diplomatic Moves Following Colombia's Golan Recognition

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar visited Majdal Shams in the Golan Heights to meet with local leaders and discuss recent diplomatic developments. Sa'ar shared details of his conversation last Thursday with Colombian President Alvaro de la Espriella in Barranquilla, where Colombia officially recognized Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. Sa'ar expressed his intention to seek similar recognition from additional countries, emphasizing the strategic importance of the Golan for Israel's security. He highlighted the tragic events of October 7 as underscoring Israel's need for defensible borders and praised former U.S. President Donald Trump as the first leader to recognize Israeli sovereignty there, urging Colombia's president to be the second.

Local leaders in the Golan praised Sa'ar for his efforts, with Uri Kalner, head of the Golan Regional Council, calling the recognition a historic and moral achievement. Sa'ar also briefed the officials on condemnations from some Arab states regarding Colombia's decision and predicted that such pressures would increase. Dawlan Abu Salah, mayor of Majdal Shams, thanked Sa'ar for his visit, diplomatic work, and support for the Druze community and regional development. The meeting included other local council heads from Katzrin, Mas'ade, and Buq'ata.

This diplomatic progress follows Colombia's announcement to reopen its embassy in Israel, signaling a strengthening of bilateral ties. Israel is now preparing further diplomatic initiatives to expand international recognition of its sovereignty over the Golan Heights amid anticipated regional pushback.
