Netanyahu Thanks Colombia for Golan Recognition Amid Deadly Earthquake Crisis

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu posted a video on Tuesday thanking Colombia's president for recognizing Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. In the video, Netanyahu praised the diplomatic milestone, highlighting the strategic importance of the Golan for Israel's security and recalling the prior U.S. recognition under President Donald Trump. "The people are with the Golan, the people are with Colombia," Netanyahu said, emphasizing the significance of Colombia's move as a second step in strengthening Israel's position in the region.

However, at the same time Colombia was grappling with a devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake that had killed at least 224 people, injured hundreds, and left over 3,000 missing. Despite the ongoing humanitarian crisis and rescue efforts underway, Netanyahu's video made no mention of the disaster or the victims. This omission drew attention given the stark contrast between Israel's celebration of the diplomatic achievement and Colombia's emergency situation.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar had already expressed condolences and offered Israeli assistance to Colombia following the earthquake, stating Israel's readiness to help in any way needed. Yet Netanyahu's message focused solely on the Golan recognition without acknowledging the tragedy unfolding in Colombia. The earthquake caused extensive damage, with over 1,500 buildings affected and dozens collapsing entirely, leaving many families awaiting news of loved ones.

The incident highlights the tension between diplomatic messaging and humanitarian realities, as Israel marked a foreign policy success while Colombia faced a national emergency. Netanyahu's video underscored the political significance of Colombia's recognition but omitted any reference to the ongoing disaster impacting the Colombian people.
