Israeli Foreign Minister Sa'ar Pushes for More Countries to Recognize Israeli Sovereignty Over Golan Heights

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar visited Majdal Shams in the Golan Heights on Wednesday, meeting with local leaders following Colombia's historic recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the region. Sa'ar recounted his recent meeting with Colombian President Gustavo Petro in Barranquilla, where they agreed on this diplomatic milestone. He emphasized to the local leaders the strategic importance of the Golan Heights for Israel's security, referencing the tragic events of October 7 to highlight Israel's vulnerability due to its small geographic depth.

Sa'ar recalled telling President Petro that Colombia, as a large country, could take a courageous step similar to former U.S. President Donald Trump, who was the first world leader to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan. He urged Petro to become the second leader to do so. The foreign minister also noted that some Arab countries condemned Colombia's decision, and he expects such diplomatic pressures to increase. Nevertheless, Sa'ar pledged to continue efforts to secure recognition from additional countries.

Local officials praised Sa'ar's role in advancing construction and settlement in the Golan Heights, crediting him with significant progress anchored in coalition agreements and government decisions over the past two administrations. Uri Kalner, head of the Golan Regional Council, called the Colombian recognition a "historic and moral achievement". Daoulin Abu Salah, mayor of Majdal Shams, expressed gratitude for Sa'ar's support of the Druze community and regional development. Other council heads present included Yehuda Dua (Katzrin), Salman Batish (Mas'ade), and William Abu Awad (Bukata).

Colombia's recognition followed Sa'ar's visit there for President Petro's inauguration, marking a major diplomatic success after the United States was the first country to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights during Trump's presidency.
