Jewish Community in Cali, Colombia, Suffers Property Damage but No Casualties After Deadly Earthquake

A powerful earthquake struck western Colombia, killing over 220 people and causing significant damage in the city of Cali, including to the local Jewish community. Meir Partush, a resident and director of the "Jewish House" in Cali, reported that while many Jewish families lost their homes and the synagogue sustained structural damage, no community members or Israeli tourists were physically harmed. The earthquake, felt strongly around 7:00 a.m., caused walls to collapse and ceilings to fall inside the synagogue.

The "Jewish House," which functions similarly to a Chabad center by providing a synagogue, kosher food, and support to Israeli travelers, quickly became a central aid hub. Partush explained that the center is offering food, water, and repair assistance to anyone in need, including local non-Jewish residents, as part of their mission. Overnight, the team cared for many homeless Jews, relying entirely on donations and external help due to the community's limited financial resources.

Prior to the quake, Partush had ensured contact with hostels and Israeli tourists to confirm their safety. Despite the extensive property damage, the community is grateful that no lives were lost among its members and continues to provide critical support amid the ongoing recovery efforts.
