Jerusalem Court Orders Immediate Release of Tal Yinon Dradik After 38-Day Hunger Strike

After a 38-day hunger strike, Tal Yinon Dradik was ordered released immediately and unconditionally by Judge Amir Shaked of the Jerusalem Magistrate's Court. Dradik had been detained under an administrative order issued by Central Command Chief Avi Blot, which he opposed by refusing to comply with house arrest conditions. Represented by attorneys Moshe Polsky, Nati Rom, and Daniel Shimshilashvili from the Honenu organization, Dradik’s legal team argued the order was issued without proper authority and was unenforceable.

The case originated from a serious attack investigation involving a Palestinian in the West Bank area of Kharbat Humsa, where security agencies suspected Dradik and others of involvement. Dradik denied any wrongdoing. Due to insufficient evidence for criminal charges, the military commander imposed administrative detention restricting Dradik to his mother-in-law’s home. Dradik defied this and remained at his residence in a settlement, leading to his arrest and subsequent hunger strike, which sparked public protests.

In July 2026, Defense Minister Israel Katz visited Dradik in jail, instructed not to extend the administrative order, and called for his release. When Central Command Chief Blot sought to maintain restrictions through legal appeals, Katz announced intentions to dismiss him, causing turmoil in the defense establishment. Following intervention by IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, Katz retracted his dismissal plan. In early August 2026, the district court rejected the military’s appeal, ruling the house arrest condition was unenforceable. Dradik was released from detention but remained subject to a ban from Judea and Samaria areas except Modi’in Illit and had to report periodically to police.

The court’s latest ruling fully frees Dradik without conditions. His lawyers expressed satisfaction that the defense’s arguments were accepted and criticized the administrative order as baseless. They hope the judicial decision will be respected and allow Dradik to rebuild his life and family.
