IDF's First Ultra-Orthodox Reserve Battalion Completes Initial Training Exercise in Golan Heights

The IDF's first ultra-Orthodox reserve battalion, Battalion Shimon (1200) of the Hachshmonaim Brigade, completed its inaugural battalion-level training exercise last week in the Golan Heights. This milestone marks the official establishment and operational readiness of the battalion for future missions. During the exercise, troops practiced open-field combat, raids, and urban warfare.

Battalion Shimon is composed of reservists who previously received exemptions from service and ultra-Orthodox soldiers from other army units. The recruits underwent comprehensive combat training tailored to their religious lifestyle at the Hachshmonaim Training Base. The battalion also plans to integrate graduates from the brigade's regular service track.

As part of their preparation, soldiers completed specialized courses in explosives, rappelling, drones, anti-tank missiles, medical aid, and mortars, all adapted to their lifestyle to enable the battalion to operate as an organic unit. The IDF noted that since the start of the war, dozens of regular and reserve battalions have been formed to expand the ranks and reduce the burden on existing soldiers.

Following the exercise, Battalion Shimon is expected to deploy in the northern sector for operational missions as needed during the coming months and throughout the holiday period.
