Despite the ceasefire, Hamas is recruiting young men aged 18 to 20, arming them with Kalashnikov rifles and deploying them at checkpoints. These recruits, often dressed in civilian clothes and masked, are reportedly paid around 600-700 shekels to serve.

Residents describe an atmosphere of fear and repression, with Hamas suppressing any dissent through intimidation and violence. Financially, Hamas is accused of exploiting Gaza’s residents by imposing heavy taxes and extorting money, particularly from merchants. Failure to comply reportedly results in imprisonment and torture. Cigarette smuggling is cited as a major source of revenue, with Hamas confiscating goods and funds under the guise of enforcement.
