Hamas Recruits Youths and Enforces Control in Gaza Despite Ceasefire

One week after the ceasefire in Gaza, Hamas is reportedly reasserting its control over the territory, according to exclusive testimonies from Gaza residents interviewed by N12. Despite the truce and halted targeted killings, Hamas has begun recruiting young men aged 18 to 20, arming them with Kalashnikov rifles and deploying them at checkpoints. These recruits are often dressed in civilian clothes and wear masks, receiving payments of around 600-700 shekels.

Residents describe ongoing repression by Hamas against any form of dissent, including social media criticism or public protests. Armed masked men reportedly respond with violence to suppress opposition, maintaining a climate of fear to prevent uprisings. Hamas operatives are also said to be embedded in command centers within hospitals and active on the streets, closely monitoring the population.

Skepticism remains high regarding Hamas’s commitment to disarmament. Husam al-Astal, commander of an armed militia in Khan Yunis opposing Hamas, told N12 that Hamas will not relinquish its weapons, fearing retribution from the population for past killings. Other Gaza residents echoed this view, accusing Hamas of deceit and suggesting any disarmament would be superficial, involving only a small fraction of their estimated 60,000 to 70,000 rifles.

Financially, Hamas is accused of exploiting civilians to rebuild its power. Al-Astal stated that Hamas imposes heavy taxes ranging from 18% to 40% on goods like cigarettes, confiscating merchandise under smuggling allegations and keeping the proceeds. Merchants reportedly face imprisonment and torture if they refuse to pay. Residents say Hamas remains the dominant authority in Gaza, controlling both the streets and economic life, with no intention of relinquishing power or weapons.
