Israeli Government Approves Transfer of 1 Billion Shekels for Urgent Classified Defense Procurement

The Israeli government is set to approve the transfer of one billion shekels to the Ministry of Defense for urgent and classified defense procurement. The decision, scheduled for Sunday, follows approval by the Defense Acquisition Ministers' Committee last Friday, citing an immediate operational need.

Of the total amount, 850 million shekels will be reallocated from the 2026 budget originally designated for technological sector investments under the Ministry of Economy and Industry, aimed at promoting investments and employment. An additional 150 million shekels will come from previously reserved but unallocated government budgets from earlier decisions. This transfer does not represent new government spending but a re-prioritization within the existing 2026 budget.

A legal opinion attached to the proposal emphasizes that without this budget approval, the urgent procurement cannot be executed. Due to the classified nature of the procurement, the operational reasons for the approval cannot be publicly disclosed. The Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Defense jointly submitted the proposal to the government for approval.

The move highlights the government's prioritization of defense needs amid operational demands, balancing budgetary constraints by shifting funds from civilian technological investments to defense.
