Israeli Government Approves Urgent 1 Billion Shekel Boost to Defense Budget Amid Emergency

The Israeli government is set to formally approve an urgent transfer of 1 billion shekels to the defense system, following a prior approval by the Ministerial Committee for Procurement last Thursday. This emergency funding is intended to address the current state of emergency in Israel and will be used for urgent military armament, though specific details remain classified. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has demanded a substantial increase of 50 billion shekels to the defense strengthening package, aiming to raise the total defense budget for the coming decade to 400 billion shekels, up from the previously announced 350 billion.

The additional 1 billion shekels will be sourced by cutting 850 million shekels from the Ministry of Economy and Industry’s budget, originally allocated for technological investments and employment promotion, alongside 150 million shekels from previously unexecuted budget decisions. This budget increase will bring the overall defense budget to a record 184 billion shekels. Netanyahu’s announcement came without prior consultation with senior officials from the Finance Ministry or the Bank of Israel, prompting concern among some Finance Ministry leaders who warned that implementing the increase could necessitate tax hikes and further cuts to civilian ministry budgets.
