Only One Rafael Laser Interceptor Delivered to IDF and Not Yet Operational
Rafael Advanced Defense Systems has delivered just one unit of its "Iron Beam" laser interception system to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), and it remains non-operational, a senior defense official revealed. The system was handed over about six months ago, but the process to make it fully operational has not yet been completed. "Iron Beam" was highly anticipated within Israel's defense establishment due to its intended capability to intercept non-ballistic missiles, drones, mortar shells, and unmanned aerial vehicles at ranges up to approximately 10 kilometers, with interception costs of only a few shekels each.
Despite billions of shekels invested in its development, the defense sector has not yet acquired additional units, and the main reasons for the delay in operational deployment have not been publicly disclosed. Rafael executives noted that technical adjustments are still needed before the system can be fully operational, although Rafael's chairman Yuval Steinitz expressed optimism four months ago that activation was imminent. The company has achieved a global breakthrough in optical technology with "Iron Beam," but the slow pace of deployment contrasts with earlier claims that it would be a game-changing solution.
"Iron Beam" is intended to complement Israel's existing air defense array, including the Iron Dome system. Budgetary pressures on the Ministry of Defense are believed to contribute to the delays, as the system itself is costly and requires a large number of units for nationwide deployment, despite the low cost per interception. Rafael continues to develop laser systems and produce additional "Iron Beam" units for the IDF. Concurrently, the Ministry of Defense is investing in multiple solutions to counter drones, with "Iron Beam" expected to be one among several.
Rafael, a globally sought-after defense contractor, reported that exports accounted for 63% of its sales in 2025, totaling 21.7 billion shekels, a 10% increase. The company is also advancing development of interceptors for hypersonic missiles, which travel faster than Mach 1 and pose a significant challenge due to their speed and stealth capabilities. Additionally, Rafael is working on next-generation naval weapons, including torpedo defense systems described as a "naval Iron Dome," and focusing on micro- and nano-satellite technologies in the space sector.
