Northern Israel Restaurants See Nearly 16% Rise in Guests Amid Slow Recovery

Restaurants in northern Israel are gradually recovering from the impact of last year's intense conflict. Between August 2025 and July 2026, the number of restaurant bookings in the north increased by 8.9% compared to the same period during the war, while actual guest visits rose by 15.9%, including walk-ins. Nationally, bookings grew by only 1.6% and guest visits by 4.8% during the same timeframe. This stronger recovery in the north is attributed to the significant damage and prolonged closures northern restaurants faced from August 2024 to July 2025, even after other parts of the country resumed normal activity.

Nitzar Shoshani, owner of Lagos restaurant near the Sea of Galilee, noted that weekend inbound tourism is driving the recovery, though fluctuations remain. He highlighted that the absence of pilgrims, who previously filled tour boats and frequented local eateries, continues to affect business. The core northern region, including the Galilee, Golan, Jezreel Valley, Sea of Galilee, Beit She'an, Nazareth, and Afula, saw the strongest growth with a 12.2% increase in bookings and a 22.6% rise in guests. In contrast, Haifa and the northern coastal area experienced more modest increases of 6.3% in bookings and 11.9% in guests.

Consumer behavior has shifted, with a higher proportion of spontaneous diners rising from 47.5% to 48.5% in the north, and from 35.5% to 38.1% in the core northern region. Additionally, customers are making reservations closer to their dining date, reducing the average online booking lead time from four days to 3.5 days, a 12% decrease, and phone bookings similarly dropped by 14%. This shorter booking window has contributed to a decline in same-day cancellations from 23.5% to 20.6%.

Nir Tamir, co-owner of Tamarlin restaurant in Nahalal, shared that their location near an air force base allowed them to remain open continuously since October 7, 2024, supporting staff and community ties. She observed new faces arriving on weekends, though visitors from cities like Modiin and Jerusalem have yet to return fully, reflecting ongoing uncertainty that complicates long-term planning. Tamir described the challenges of operating amid regional tensions but emphasized the importance of supporting the local economy by dining out.
