Israeli Singer and Liturgical Poet Avishai Levi Dies Tragically at 46 in Jerusalem Accident

The Israeli music and liturgical poetry community mourns the sudden death of Avishai Levi, a renowned singer and poet from Jerusalem, who passed away at age 46. The tragic accident occurred on Friday afternoon in the Bukharim neighborhood on Adoniyahu HaKohen Street. Levi had stopped his vehicle to help passengers unload equipment when, apparently due to the handbrake not being properly engaged, the car rolled backward down a sloped street. He tried to stop the vehicle but was crushed beneath it.

Emergency responders arrived quickly, performing prolonged resuscitation efforts before transporting Levi in critical condition to Hadassah Mount Scopus Hospital. Despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead after a prolonged struggle. His family promptly identified his body, and thanks to their swift action and the assistance of religious authorities, all necessary procedures were completed before the Sabbath, allowing immediate burial at Har HaMenuchot without the need for transfer to the Abu Kabir forensic institute.

Avishai Levi was a beloved figure in the world of Jewish liturgical music and Eastern melodies. Starting as a child prodigy with the legendary "Jerusalem Blossoms" band, he released seven albums and numerous singles that became staples at Jewish celebrations and homes. Beyond performing, he dedicated himself to preparing boys for their bar mitzvah Torah readings and liturgical singing. Friends and colleagues remember him as a warm, generous person with infectious joy who enriched thousands of lives through his decades of artistic contribution.

His funeral took place at midnight on Saturday night at Har HaMenuchot cemetery. The community honors his memory and mourns the loss of a cherished cultural icon. "May his soul be bound in the bond of life," they said.
