Thousands Attend Funeral of Beloved Israeli Cantor Avishai Levi Killed in Tragic Car Accident

Thousands gathered after midnight on Saturday night at the Mount of Olives cemetery in Jerusalem to mourn Avishai Levi, a well-known cantor and liturgical poet in the ultra-Orthodox community, who tragically died in a car accident on the eve of the Sabbath. The funeral took place at the Sephardic funeral home on the Mount of Olives, where attendees remembered Levi as a humble man devoted to honoring Torah scholars and bringing joy to weddings.

The fatal accident occurred on Adoniyahu HaKohen Street in the Bukharim neighborhood of Jerusalem. Levi, 46, was standing near his vehicle when it suddenly rolled backward with the gear in reverse rather than park. Attempting to stop the car, he was crushed between the driver's door and a pole. Eyewitnesses recounted the harrowing scene.

Among those eulogizing Levi was Rabbi Eliezer Menashe Donat, his teacher, who urged the public to strengthen themselves in memory of Levi. His brother, Rabbi Netanel Levi, head of a kollel, delivered an emotional eulogy highlighting Avishai’s respect for Torah learners, his generosity during holidays, and his exceptional reverence and humility toward their parents. He described how their mother deeply felt Avishai’s presence in every moment.

Avishai Levi was a prominent figure in the Haredi music scene, participating in major performances across Israel, including a large event in Ashkelon in 2016 alongside other notable cantors. He released popular singles such as "The Dance Begins" and "From Your Heavenly Dwelling." His death has left a profound void in his family and community. May his soul be bound in the bond of life.
