WhatsApp Expands Parental Controls to Manage Children’s Messaging and Group Access

WhatsApp has enhanced its parental control features, allowing parents greater oversight over who can message their children, which groups they can join, and how to handle messages from strangers. This update builds on the parental managed accounts introduced in March 2026, designed for children under the minimum age for independent WhatsApp use, typically under 13 years old.

The new controls require both the parent’s and child’s devices to be connected, with parents guided through linking accounts via a code or invitation. Once linked, the child’s account becomes managed by the parent, who can lock key settings with a personal code to prevent unauthorized changes. Parents can filter incoming messages from unknown contacts, reviewing and approving or rejecting contact requests, ensuring children only communicate with approved family and friends.

Parental controls also extend to group participation, enabling parents to set conditions for joining groups and manage privacy settings. WhatsApp can notify parents of significant account activities, such as setting changes or contact-related actions. The child is aware their account is linked to a parent, so monitoring is transparent.

Importantly, WhatsApp maintains strict privacy boundaries: parents do not receive copies of their child’s messages and cannot access chat content or voice and video calls. All communications remain end-to-end encrypted, accessible only to conversation participants, with WhatsApp itself having no access to message content.

This update, now rolling out more visibly on iPhone following an earlier Android rollout, aims to make existing parental controls easier to find and use. WhatsApp’s goal is to allow younger children to safely use the platform where their family and friends are active, without granting full account capabilities prematurely. When children reach the appropriate age, families are notified about transitioning to a regular account with expanded features like channels, status updates, and AI services. The rollout is gradual, so some users may not see the new options immediately after updating the app.
