Palestinian Driver Charged with Murder After Deadly Hit-and-Run in Israel
A Palestinian shuttle driver from Dura in the Hebron district has been charged with murder and multiple other serious offenses following a deadly hit-and-run incident in southern Israel. The driver, identified as Shoamara, was transporting illegal Palestinian workers into Israel when a passenger fell ill and requested to stop. Shoamara refused, fearing capture by Israeli security forces, and reacted angrily, telling the passengers "Let him die, it’s not a big deal" before continuing the journey.
Upon reaching a grove, Shoamara abruptly stopped, exited the vehicle, and confronted the passengers who were seated in the truck bed. A physical altercation ensued during which Shoamara was injured in the head. He then fled the scene, hiding the vehicle under a nearby railway bridge and leaving behind his phone, on which he recorded a message denying the murder and claiming he was attacked by five passengers.
Emergency medical teams pronounced one passenger, Sarha, dead at the scene and treated two others injured. Police investigations, supported by passenger testimonies and evidence, led to Shoamara’s arrest in Beersheba after he surrendered to authorities following a day on the run. He faces seven charges including intentional murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault, illegal presence in Israel, transporting illegal workers under aggravating circumstances, driving without a license, and operating a vehicle with a forged license plate.
Shoamara’s lawyer described the vehicle as a weapon and warned of potential interference with the legal process if Shoamara were released. The driver has a history of illegal entry into Israel and conditional prison sentences pending further offenses. The case is now before the Beersheba District Court.
