Israeli Central Elections Committee to Hold Special Meeting on Delegitimization Campaign

The Central Elections Committee of Israel will convene a special session next week with Knesset faction leaders to address a campaign aimed at delegitimizing committee members. The meeting will highlight the risks posed by this campaign and present scenarios to help counteract improper influences on election outcomes, both internal and external. A dedicated team has been established within the committee to investigate and manage these issues.

This development follows a rare confrontation last Monday between the committee chairman, Judge Noam Solberg, and Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee chairman Boaz Bismuth. During a discussion on election preparations attended by Shin Bet head David Zini, Bismuth raised serious concerns about threats to election integrity and democratic order, citing dangers both from outside and within the system. He criticized the committee's appointments as unclear and questionable, demanding explanations.

Judge Solberg responded by expressing surprise at Bismuth's remarks, affirming confidence in the recent appointments and the committee's professionalism. Bismuth insisted that his concerns were well-founded and supported by evidence. Following this exchange, Solberg and Deputy Director General Attorney Din Livneh met with Government Legal Advisor Gali Baharav-Miara and State Attorney Amit Eisman to coordinate election preparations.

Solberg emphasized the committee's readiness to face all election challenges in close cooperation with state authorities, underscoring the importance of law enforcement's firm commitment to uphold election laws. Baharav-Miara stressed that safeguarding election integrity is a cornerstone of Israeli democracy and assured full cooperation between law enforcement and the committee to ensure a fair, clean electoral process free from improper influence.
