Israel's Central Elections Committee Details Measures to Prevent Election Fraud and Regulate Campaign Content

With 64 days remaining until the Israeli Knesset elections, the Central Elections Committee is on high alert to ensure the integrity of the voting process. The committee is responsible for overseeing the entire election operation, including managing polling stations, counting votes, and ensuring that elections are conducted legally and freely. The committee chair also handles petitions related to violations of election campaign laws.

To prevent election fraud, the committee employs multiple safeguards. Voting is conducted using paper ballots, eliminating risks of electronic vote tampering. Each polling station includes representatives from the committee and various political parties to supervise voting and counting. Election integrity supervisors and Israeli police officers are present at polling sites to monitor for irregularities. Additionally, the committee conducts a special post-election audit to verify results.

The committee chair’s powers are legally defined and limited; not all election-related issues fall under their jurisdiction. Government ministries and security agencies continue their functions independently during elections. Regarding campaign content, the chair reviews petitions alleging violations of campaign laws and may order removal of offending materials if violations are proven. Such laws prohibit misuse of public assets, military association with parties, use of children in campaigns, and require clear disclosure of campaign sponsors and digital content origins.

The chair does not remove campaign content unilaterally but only after a formal petition is filed and both sides are heard. Temporary removal orders may be issued pending final decisions. This process can take time due to legal procedures and the need to balance free expression with election fairness.
