Breslov Leaders Prepare for Rosh Hashanah Pilgrimage to Ukraine Amid Security Concerns

Tens of thousands of Breslov Hasidim are preparing to visit the grave of Rabbi Nachman in Uman, Ukraine, for Rosh Hashanah despite the ongoing war. Senior leaders of the Breslov community recently convened in Jerusalem to express gratitude to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the Ukrainian authorities for their support and assistance in facilitating the pilgrimage during such a difficult time. The gathering included prominent rabbis such as Rabbi Shmuel Moshe Kramer and Rabbi Yaakov Shiloach, the chief rabbi of Uman, who presented ornate certificates of appreciation to Ukrainian officials, including the governor of Cherkasy region, Igor Taburov, and local security heads responsible for protecting the pilgrimage site under heavy threat.

While the community expressed deep appreciation for Ukraine's openness and cooperation, they also voiced serious concerns about the complex geopolitical situation and ongoing Russian attacks. Logistical and bureaucratic challenges remain significant, compounded by worries over potential restrictive measures from various security agencies and the extent of Israeli diplomatic and consular support for pilgrims traveling to an active war zone. One participant described the situation as extremely sensitive, highlighting the tension between Ukraine's efforts to welcome pilgrims and the community's fears for their safety.

The Breslov leadership is finalizing preparations for the annual airlift to Uman, hoping for a peaceful and secure New Year period. They continue to pray for calm and safe passage for the thousands expected to undertake the pilgrimage amid the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
