Ukrainian Authorities and Breslov Union Coordinate Security for Uman Rosh Hashanah Pilgrimage

Preparations for the annual Rosh Hashanah pilgrimage to Uman, Ukraine, are intensifying as tens of thousands of Breslov Hasidim and other Jewish pilgrims plan to visit the gravesite of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov. Local Ukrainian authorities, together with representatives from the Breslov Union, held a comprehensive coordination meeting this week at the Cherkasy regional government building, which oversees Uman. The meeting aimed to ensure the large-scale event proceeds safely amid complex security and logistical challenges.

Key officials attending included Cherkasy Governor Igor Taborets, Deputy Governor Oleksandr Shmarai, Cherkasy Police Commander Yaroslav Mezheni, and Uman Deputy Mayor Oleg Ganits. Representing the pilgrims, Rabbi Natan Ben Nun, chairman of the Breslov Union in Uman, detailed the needs of the expected crowds. Discussions focused on critical issues such as traffic management on main routes, deployment of reinforced police forces in Uman's Jewish quarter, and rapid response plans for medical and logistical emergencies.

Police Commander Mezheni emphasized their heightened readiness, stating, "Our top priority is to ensure the safety and security of all pilgrims arriving in Uman." He noted close coordination with the Breslov Union and stressed strict enforcement of public order and security regulations. Sources familiar with the meeting described a positive and constructive atmosphere, highlighting the local authorities' commitment under Governor Taborets to effective cooperation with the Breslov leadership.

The Breslov Union reiterated its call for all pilgrims to fully comply with local security instructions, adhere to Ukrainian laws including any curfews, and conduct themselves respectfully to honor the sanctity of the event. This annual gathering remains a significant religious and cultural event, requiring meticulous planning to accommodate the influx of visitors safely.
