Israel Funds Security for Breslov Pilgrims Traveling to Uman Amid Ukraine Conflict
In response to requests from local Ukrainian authorities, Israel will finance enhanced security measures costing 750,000 shekels for thousands of Breslov Hasidim traveling to Uman for Rosh Hashanah. The Israeli Foreign Ministry has established a special emergency operations center to closely monitor the mass pilgrimage to the tomb of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov.
Due to the Russia-Ukraine war and the closure of Ukrainian airspace, pilgrims must travel through neighboring countries. After difficulties at the Moldova border last year, this year the main crossing point will be through Romania. From there, pilgrims will undertake a long overland journey to Uman.
Romanian authorities have demanded increased security, including the deployment of Israeli police officers on site to assist with communication and crowd management. The Foreign Ministry has coordinated with other government ministries, including the Interior and Transportation Ministries, to share the security costs. The special operations center in Jerusalem will operate around the clock to ensure the safety of travelers throughout their journey.
