Fatal Road Accidents Claim Lives of Israeli Children During Summer Break

During the current summer vacation in Israel, a tragic increase in fatal road accidents involving children has been reported. Seven-year-old Roy from Kiryat Yam was killed in a buggy accident in Rekhas near Haifa while playing outside on a Saturday night. Emergency teams declared his death at the scene. His uncle, Beni Ben David, expressed deep sorrow and urged parents to vigilantly protect their children, emphasizing the fragility of young lives.

Data from the National Road Safety Authority shows a 13% rise in severe injuries to children during summer vacations compared to school months over the past three years. In the last week alone, 15 people died in road accidents, including three teenagers aged 15 to 19. In July and August 2025, 12 children and teens under 19 died and 101 were seriously injured, marking an 18% increase over the previous three years’ summer averages. Most fatal accidents involving children occur on urban roads, with over half of the victims aged 15-19 and many younger children as pedestrians.

Another heartbreaking case involved 3.5-year-old Ilai Yehonatan Ben Shabat from Or Akiva, who died after being hit by a car near his home. His father, Or, who is six months pregnant with another child, shared his grief publicly, stressing forgiveness toward the driver and calling for compassion rather than blame. Ilai’s death highlights the dangers children face even close to home, especially during summer when they spend more unsupervised time outdoors.

The Road Safety Authority warns that children’s cognitive inability to assess road risks and their presence in unfamiliar areas increase accident risks. About 38% of child pedestrian fatalities involve children suddenly entering roads or crossing where visibility is poor. The use of electric scooters and bicycles also spikes in summer, contributing to more injuries and deaths. The authority urges parents, drivers, and local authorities to increase vigilance, enforce safe crossing rules, and promote protective riding practices.

Families of other victims, such as 10-year-old Oav Rabous from Kalanswa who died in a quad bike accident, call for stricter regulations on youth driving and greater public awareness. The summer months remain a perilous time for children on Israeli roads, demanding collective responsibility to prevent further tragedies.
