Chef-Driven Fine Dining Opens in Israel’s Crime Capital Lod
After Tel Aviv, Haifa, and Jerusalem established themselves on Israel’s culinary map, fine dining is now emerging in less conventional peripheral locations. DAW, meaning "light" in Moroccan, is a meticulously crafted kosher chef’s restaurant located in the Ganei Aviv neighborhood of Lod, a city often labeled Israel’s crime capital. Chef Or Ben Simon, a 33-year-old French immigrant, opened DAW near his home, aiming to create not just a restaurant but a heartfelt, intimate dining experience. His wife Sarah manages the service and floor.
DAW operates three evenings a week (Tuesday to Thursday) and seats only 24 guests around an open kitchen, allowing diners to watch Ben Simon prepare each dish. The chef’s culinary journey began far from the kitchen as a combat coach, but during the COVID-19 pandemic, he transitioned from selling homemade pizzas to private chef events, eventually launching his own restaurant. The menu features 10 tasting dishes inspired by Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, and personal influences, with each plate handcrafted and presented with attention to detail, including handmade ceramic serving ware and romantic background music.
Ben Simon’s training includes studies at the Danon Culinary Excellence School and an internship at Paris’s Guefen restaurant, experiences that shaped his precise and aesthetic French technique. Signature dishes include sea bass cigar in XO sauce, red tuna tartare with cherry aguachile, and handmade dumplings filled with corn cream and Parmesan. The restaurant offers a unique, personal atmosphere designed to create memorable moments. DAW is located at 15 Rivka Imanu Street, Lod, with meals priced at 450 shekels per person excluding drinks. Vegan menus are available for groups of six or more by prior arrangement. The restaurant is kosher and reservations are required.
