IDF Loses Control as Extremist Settlers Dominate West Bank Areas

An incident in the Palestinian village of Tal two weeks ago was not a planned terror attack but a violent confrontation that escalated into a firefight. Dozens of Israeli civilians entered the village, located in Areas A and B of the West Bank, without military permission or security coordination, violating Israeli law which prohibits Israelis from entering Area A without explicit approval from the military commander. The clash resulted in the deaths of IDF Captain Yuval Ezra and Deputy Security Officer Binyahu Malat, along with four Palestinians. The investigation revealed tactical failures by the IDF, which typically supports coordinated civilian visits but was unprepared for this unauthorized incursion.

The event highlights a broader issue: the IDF, as the security authority in the West Bank, is unable to enforce the law effectively. Extremist settler groups have taken control, acting independently and often illegally, while the IDF and Israeli police are stretched thin and sometimes end up protecting these groups. For example, following a fire near the Gilead Farm, which was ruled accidental, settlers established 13 new illegal outposts around the area, adding to about 100 others recently created. The IDF not only refrains from dismantling these outposts but also uses costly technology and intelligence resources to defend them.

Another example occurred when dozens of Jewish settlers entered the Palestinian city of Nablus (Area A) illegally. The IDF deployed forces not to expel them but to protect them until they left voluntarily. This pattern shows the military acting as security for provocations rather than enforcing the law. The IDF’s role has become politicized, influenced by right-wing politicians, as seen in plans to occupy another refugee camp, likely Balata, despite no operational necessity.

While the IDF has largely dismantled organized armed groups in refugee camps over recent years, lone attackers remain a threat, managed through intelligence and targeted operations. However, the military’s failure to control extremist settlers and its role in facilitating their illegal actions undermines the rule of law and endangers the Zionist project. Extremist settlers criticize IDF officers despite the army protecting their lives, creating a dangerous politicization of military actions in the West Bank.
