IDF Faces Mounting Frustration Over Settler Violence in West Bank
Recent clashes in the Palestinian village of Qusra, West Bank, highlight a worrying trend of eroding deterrence and perceived weakness by Israeli security forces, including the IDF, Border Police, and regular police, in enforcing law and order. These incidents, along with others in recent weeks, signal a high level of volatility that intelligence agencies warn could ignite a widespread escalation in the West Bank.
In response, security bodies have intensified social media monitoring for incitement and are conducting preemptive arrests of inciters. The IDF Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Aviv Kochavi, has ordered an additional division to raise its alert status, preparing for rapid reinforcement with more battalions and brigades. Soldier leaves during the upcoming holidays are also in doubt due to ongoing strain on personnel and reserves.
Security officials are questioning the effectiveness of the multi-mission command center designed to combat nationalistic crime. They suggest transferring it to police control and augmenting it with more forces to enable proactive action against known offenders and reduce friction. A senior military source described the current situation as untenable, stating that IDF soldiers are ill-equipped to handle confrontations with Israeli civilians, emphasizing that law enforcement is the responsibility of the police and Border Police.
Earlier, Central Command chief Maj. Gen. Avi Bluth insisted on confiscating vehicles involved in such incidents. Following the Qusra event, additional forces were deployed to the area to prevent further violence. Military sources noted that most incidents revolve around control of hills or outposts and grazing areas, with hundreds of young individuals acting with impunity. The IDF and Border Police responded to Qusra after reports of Israeli rioters arriving in the area. Forces found dozens of rioters barricaded in a Palestinian home with residents inside. Despite the number of rioters, no arrests were made. Jewish sources in the West Bank claim the incident began when Palestinians threw stones at a group of Israelis and a foreign media crew, leading to a stone-throwing confrontation from both sides.
