IDF Warns of Escalating Anarchy in West Bank After Deadly Attack on Israeli Hikers

For about six months, senior officers in the IDF Central Command have warned that the rising violence and anarchy caused by extremist Jewish settlers in the West Bank could lead to severe consequences. They feared that Palestinians might eventually retaliate by kidnapping or ambushing Israeli youths entering Palestinian villages at night. The recent attack in the village of Tal in Samaria, where two Israeli soldiers, Major Yuval Ezra and Deputy Chief of Security Binyahu Malt, were killed, has intensified these concerns. The hikers were not on a nationalist crime mission, and their entry into the village did not justify the shooting against them, yet the outcome was tragic.

The IDF has identified around 70 local Palestinian "guard committees" formed in villages due to the lack of protection from both the IDF and the Palestinian Authority, which does not operate in Areas C and B. It remains unclear if the attackers were part of these groups, but the fears of IDF officers about escalating violence appear to be materializing. Unlike previous attacks, this incident was not a premeditated nationalist attack but rather an opportunistic assault, similar to other killings this year where Palestinians exploited chances to attack Israelis.

Major General Yuval Ezra noted that the hike took place in Area B without coordination, and the IDF was unaware of it until the clash began, calling it a serious event that should have been prevented. The IDF leadership is now questioning why they have not physically prevented settlers from entering Palestinian villages daily, instead of merely dispersing confrontations. Had they fulfilled their duties, unauthorized entries might not have become normalized, potentially preventing such deadly incidents.

Following the attack, tensions have escalated further. Five Palestinians were injured by settler gunfire, and rioters set fire to buildings in several West Bank villages. Palestinians in at least two villages retaliated against the attackers. The IDF is reinforcing its presence with two additional battalions to prevent nationalist crimes. The situation in Judea and Samaria is highly volatile, with a growing cycle of revenge attacks. The coming days will determine if this marks the start of a new wave of escalation, requiring further troop deployments and likely causing more casualties.

Separately, two stabbing attacks occurred in the West Bank within hours, injuring a civilian seriously and a soldier lightly, underscoring the ongoing security challenges in the region.
