Yom Kippur War Soldier’s Military Ranks Returned to Family in Emotional Reunion

Shahar Gal was named after Chaim Shahar, his mother’s late partner who died in the Yom Kippur War. Gal explained that Chaim Shahar was an only child whose father died shortly after him, leaving his mother, who became like a third grandmother to Gal, largely alone.

A dramatic turn occurred when Chaim Shahar’s military ranks and medals were unexpectedly found for sale at a flea market by Doron Biton. Biton, moved by the significance of the items, refused to ignore them and purchased the ranks to honor the memory of the fallen soldier. He created a memorial display at his workplace, complete with a candle, to show respect.

Biton then used social media to locate the family and successfully returned the ranks to Shahar Gal free of charge. Their meeting closed a poignant circle, symbolizing mutual responsibility and moral duty to honor fallen soldiers and preserve national memory.
