Israeli Election Committee Warns of Conspiracy Theories and Fake News Ahead of 2026 Vote

Attorney Din Lavneh, CEO of the Israeli Central Elections Committee, spoke on Radio 103fm on August 4, 2026, addressing preparations for the upcoming elections and concerns about misinformation. He explained the voting registration process, noting that citizens can verify their inclusion in the voter registry through the Interior Ministry and appeal if they find errors. The original deadline to appeal was August 4 but was extended to August 7 due to system overloads on a single day.

Lavneh emphasized that voting rights are granted by law only to Israeli citizens and residents listed in the population registry, urging people to verify their eligibility to avoid unnecessary attempts to vote. Regarding initiatives to host Israelis living abroad for free to facilitate voting, he clarified that election law prohibits offering anything of value in exchange for votes, but paying for services without conditions is allowed.

He strongly warned against fake news, especially messages circulating on WhatsApp or SMS falsely claiming polling stations are closed. Lavneh stressed that the Elections Committee does not send such messages and advised the public to verify information only through official committee channels, including their website, app, social media, and media outlets.

Lavneh concluded by assuring that these elections are the most transparent in Israeli history, with all polling station protocols and voter information publicly accessible online. The committee will maintain constant communication with the public and media to provide accurate updates throughout the election period.
