Likud Minister Supports Opening Primaries to New Members Amid Party Ruling

Ahead of the Likud party primaries, Minister Gila Gamliel expressed support for the recent court ruling that allows new candidates to run in regional primaries, emphasizing the need to refresh the party ranks. She noted that previously ministers could not compete in these primaries, but now the decision enables all party members to have a say, which she described as a victory for democracy. Gamliel dismissed claims that the ruling was a political loss for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stating the vote was narrowly decided and reflected genuine debate among party members.

Regarding the controversy involving Defense Minister Israel Katz and Major General Avi Blot, Gamliel called it a "storm in a teacup," suggesting the issue was overblown and based on misunderstandings about command changes. She stressed that any leadership changes should be consensual between the defense minister and the military chief.

On the topic of Iran, Gamliel reaffirmed her promise to "walk the streets of Tehran" and predicted renewed unrest in the country due to severe economic hardship, including inflation and unemployment exceeding 50 percent. She highlighted the precarious situation for Iranian youth, suggesting the protests are likely to continue.

Gamliel also stated she does not intend to run in the regional primaries herself, feeling secure in her established position within the party, but supports opening opportunities for newer members to participate.
