Nissan Qashqai Hybrid Delivers Japanese Quality and Efficiency in Golan Heights Test
The Nissan Qashqai E-POWER hybrid SUV offers a unique hybrid system and high fuel efficiency, but comes at a higher upfront cost compared to its conventional counterpart. The standard Qashqai starts at 179,000 shekels, while the hybrid version begins at 195,000 shekels, a 16,000-shekel difference. Despite saving several hundred shekels monthly on fuel, it takes about three years for the hybrid to become more economical overall.
Unlike typical hybrids that use a gasoline engine assisted by an electric motor, Nissan’s E-POWER system features a gasoline engine that acts as a generator powering a strong electric motor that drives the wheels. This setup, similar to some Chinese manufacturers’ systems, reduces engine strain and fuel consumption. The new 1.5-liter generator engine is designed to operate more efficiently than the previous 1.3-liter version.
Tested in the Golan Heights at Ein Turbina, the Qashqai demonstrated excellent fuel economy, consuming only a quarter of a tank on the trip, with real-world mileage around 18 km per liter. The system is notably quiet and smooth, prioritizing electric driving to minimize gasoline engine use. It also features effective regenerative braking to recover energy.
The Qashqai impresses with ride comfort and build quality, standing out among Japanese SUVs and more affordable but less refined Chinese competitors. It includes Nissan’s active safety systems, which operate seamlessly without excessive alerts. The interior is functional and well-designed, though rear seating is somewhat firm and less spacious for three adults.
Despite its qualities, the Qashqai hybrid’s price near 200,000 shekels may limit its appeal in Israel’s market, where consumers often prioritize upfront savings over long-term efficiency. As Chinese SUVs dominate the segment with aggressive pricing, Nissan may need to offer discounts to remain competitive. When that happens, the Qashqai hybrid could become one of the best value options available.
