Kia Launches Updated Niro Hybrid and Sportage Plug-In Hybrid in Israel Amid Rising Fuel Costs

Kia has introduced refreshed versions of its popular Niro hybrid and Sportage plug-in hybrid models in Israel, responding to growing demand for fuel-efficient vehicles amid rising gasoline prices nearing 8 shekels per liter. The updated Niro, a leading hybrid crossover since its 2016 debut with over 50,000 units sold locally, features a significant facelift and upgraded driver environment. The EX trim includes a 12.3-inch multimedia screen, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, synthetic leather upholstery, climate control with rear air vents, and 16-inch wheels. The Premium trim adds 18-inch wheels, electric driver seat adjustment, ambient lighting, and wheel arch accents. The powertrain combines a 1.58-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with an electric motor delivering a combined 138 horsepower and 27 kgm torque, paired with a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission. Performance specs include 0-100 km/h in 11.3 seconds, a top speed of 170 km/h, and fuel consumption of 21.7 km/l (EX) and 19.6 km/l (Premium). Safety features include a 5-star Euro NCAP rating, eight airbags, autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, and automatic high beams. Prices start at 177,000 shekels for EX and 180,000 shekels for Premium, with discounts of 7,000 and 5,000 shekels respectively offered this month. The main competitors are the Toyota Corolla Cross and Hyundai Kona.

The Sportage plug-in hybrid, previously sold until 2024 with prices rising from 240,000 to 260,000 shekels, now retails at 220,000 shekels with no changes to equipment or powertrain, available only in the Premium trim. It features a 12.3-inch multimedia screen, 12-inch digital instrument cluster, leather upholstery, climate control with rear vents, electrically adjustable heated and ventilated front seats, electric tailgate, panoramic sunroof with shade, paddle shifters, and 19-inch wheels but no spare tire. The powertrain combines a 1.58-liter turbo gasoline engine and electric motor producing 288 horsepower, with a 6-speed automatic transmission. It accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 7.5 seconds, reaches a top speed of 206 km/h, and offers an electric range of 68 km on a 13.8 kWh battery, with a combined fuel efficiency of 35.7 km/l in hybrid mode. Safety features mirror the Niro’s with a 5-star Euro NCAP rating and advanced driver assistance systems. Despite the price cut, the Sportage remains significantly more expensive than Chinese plug-in crossovers but competes with the Toyota RAV4 plug-in hybrid for private customers who can regularly charge and drive mostly on electric power.
