Iran Denies Direct Talks with US, Engages Only Through Oman Amid Strait of Hormuz Tensions

Following US President Donald Trump's announcement of renewed talks between Washington and Tehran, Iran swiftly denied any direct negotiations are underway. An Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson clarified on Monday that no talks are currently taking place between the two countries, stating that Trump's claim does not reflect the situation on the ground.

The spokesperson also addressed the escalating tensions in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing that the waterway will not reopen as long as the US continues what Iran describes as "aggression" and a "naval blockade." Iran insists the current status will persist unless the US changes its hardline policies.

Iran is cooperating with Oman to establish a temporary and safe passage through the strait but considers this insufficient to resolve the broader crisis. Oman had proposed a plan to share control of the strait, allowing Iran to collect voluntary fees from ships passing through the critical oil route. Iran rejected this, demanding primary control over the maritime passage.

Iran's counterproposal, presented by Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi on state television, calls for full Iranian control over the inbound shipping lane and partial control over the outbound lane. He stated, "The inbound shipping lane must be entirely under Iranian control, while part of the outbound lane can remain under Omani control. If they accept this proposal, we will move to the next stage."
