IDF Chief Halts General Appointments Until 2027 Amid Political Turmoil

IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir has informed senior officers and colonels eligible for promotion that no new generals will be appointed until early 2027 due to Israel's ongoing election cycle. This decision means that Major General Avi Blot will remain commander of the Central Command at least until summer 2027, completing a minimum three-year tenure. The freeze aims to maintain stability among senior officers amid political upheaval and ongoing military operations across multiple fronts, including Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, and heightened tensions with Iran.

Zamir’s announcement follows Defense Minister Israel Katz’s recent public declaration on Channel 14 that Major General Dado Bar-Kalifa, currently head of the IDF Operations Directorate, would replace Blot as Central Command chief. This statement was made despite Blot not having completed his term and without coordination with the Chief of Staff, prompting criticism from military and political figures. The IDF spokesperson clarified that Katz’s remarks were not coordinated with Zamir, who intends to approve any key command changes only in accordance with military protocols and at an appropriate time.

Blot has been praised by Zamir for reducing terror attacks in the West Bank during his command, with the number of Israeli fatalities dropping from 20 last year to four so far this year, despite significant expansion of settlements and outposts. Blot and local settlement leaders, including Deputy Defense Minister Bezalel Smotrich, have emphasized the security benefits of agricultural outposts in the West Bank.

The controversy intensified after Blot challenged Katz’s decision, particularly regarding the case of Tal Yinon Dradik, a detainee on hunger strike accused of abusing Palestinians, whose restrictive detention order Blot sought to overturn. Katz’s prior meeting with the detainee and his unilateral announcement sparked backlash from political leaders such as Naftali Bennett, Avigdor Lieberman, and Benny Gantz, who condemned the politicization of military appointments and its impact on national security. Retired Brigadier General Ofer Winter also criticized Katz’s handling of the situation as damaging public trust.

Local leaders like Shai Alon, head of the Beit El council, urged Katz to reconsider, highlighting Blot’s leadership amid significant security challenges in the West Bank. The IDF Chief of Staff’s decision to delay appointments reflects an effort to shield the military from political interference during a sensitive period for Israel’s security and governance.
