IDF Chief Postpones Senior Command Appointments Amid Political Tensions and Ongoing Conflict

Three months ago, IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir summoned Head of Personnel Division Brigadier General Dado Bar Kalifa to discuss his future, including a potential appointment as commander of the Central Command, replacing Major General Avi Blot. However, Bar Kalifa was reluctant about the offer, preferring to command the Northern or Southern Command instead. He observed the intense political and public pressures faced by Blot in Central Command, which has become a highly contentious post involving criticism from all sides, including right-wing and left-wing factions, settlers, human rights groups, and the political echelon.

Bar Kalifa initially preferred to serve as the military secretary to the Prime Minister until a Northern or Southern Command position opened, but this plan did not materialize, partly due to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's opposition. Eventually, Bar Kalifa agreed to take the Central Command role. This case reflects a broader trend where senior officers weigh the political and public costs of positions alongside operational challenges, a phenomenon intensified by the unprecedented manpower crisis and operational strain following nearly three years of continuous warfare since October 7.

Defense Minister Israel Katz initially declared that officers in key roles during the October 7 attacks would not be promoted, later complicating the promotion landscape by advancing Air Force officers while blocking some ground force commanders. For example, Brigadier General Eliad Moati, commander of the Borders Division, was not promoted despite no fault in the October 7 failures, due to Katz's intervention. Katz also blocked the Chief of Staff's attempt to appoint a military attaché abroad, despite recommendations from the investigation committee.

The political interference in military appointments has deepened tensions between the political and military leadership. A notable incident involved Katz publicly announcing Blot's successor while Blot was still in command, highlighting the public nature of the conflict. Against this backdrop, Zamir recently informed senior officers that no new generals will be appointed until early 2027, citing the high security tensions across multiple fronts and the need to maintain stability during ongoing operations.

Blot will remain Central Command chief until at least 2027, completing a three-year term. Zamir praised Blot's performance, noting a significant drop in terror attack fatalities during his tenure despite expanded settler presence and operational demands. Settler leaders and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich have expressed strong support for Blot. The freeze on appointments aims to shield the military leadership from political turmoil during the election period and allow commanders to focus on the prolonged war effort and Iranian threat. The widening rift between the political echelon and the IDF command complicates shared responsibility for the war's outcomes, with the military bearing the brunt of criticism if failures occur.
