IDF Chief Postpones Decision on West Bank Division Commander Amid Security Tensions

On Monday, the IDF Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, and senior officers convened to discuss the appointment of the next commander of the Judea and Samaria Division, following the tenure of Brigadier General Kobi Heller, who is highly regarded for his proactive counterterrorism policies. Brigadier General Sharon Altit, with extensive command experience including leading the Menashe Regional Brigade and the Kfir Brigade, was a strong candidate. However, disagreements among the generals led Zamir to defer the decision until the new Central Command chief is appointed to succeed Major General Avi Blot, allowing that commander to make the final call. This delay comes amid heightened security and political tensions, with increasing friction and nationalist crime between Palestinians and Israelis.

Other notable appointments announced include Brigadier General Omer Cohen, former commando brigade commander and current Infantry and Paratroopers Corps chief, who will lead the Galilee Division in the Northern Command against Hezbollah. Brigadier General Benny Aharon, previously commander of the 401 Brigade and now leading the 146th Division, will take command of the 36th Armored Division, positioning him for future promotion to major general. Brigadier General Oren Simcha, formerly commander of the Nahal Brigade and currently leading the 96th Division in Central Command, will command the 162nd Armored Division and is also marked for future promotion.

Additional appointments include Brigadier General Uri Dauba as commander of the Edom Division, and Brigadier General Yehuda Aharonach, unexpectedly assigned as head of the Torah and Instruction Brigade in the Operations Directorate. Lieutenant Colonel Eyal Cohen, current Kfir Brigade commander and former Shayetet 13 naval commando leader, will command the 146th Division and be promoted to brigadier general. Lieutenant Colonel Nissim Hazan will command the 96th Division and be promoted similarly. Lieutenant Colonel Adi Ganon, former Golani Brigade commander, will lead the Operations Brigade and the 38th Division, also receiving promotion. Lieutenant Colonel Roy Tzvi will become the Infantry and Paratroopers Corps chief and be promoted.

Prestigious appointments in the Air Force include a new chief of staff and chief of air operations, both promoted to brigadier general. In the Navy, Brigadier General T. will head the intelligence division, bringing extensive operational experience to the naval command staff. These appointments reflect the IDF's strategic focus amid a volatile security environment.
