IDF Chief Delays Key West Bank Appointments Amid Rising Tensions
During a period of heightened tension in the West Bank, the Israeli military is facing delays in appointing two critical commanders, according to military sources. The Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, is reportedly postponing the appointments of the head of the Civil Administration and the commander of the Judea and Samaria Division due to concerns over political interference.
The outgoing head of the Civil Administration, Brigadier General Hesham Ibrahim, unexpectedly left his post to become the military secretary to Defense Minister Israel Katz, following Zamir's recommendation. Despite several discussions, the Chief of Staff's office has not reached a consensus on a successor. This role is crucial for coordinating government policy with the Palestinian Authority in the volatile West Bank region, especially amid fears of escalating violence.
Former head of the Civil Administration, Brigadier General (res.) Fares Attila, has been suggested as a temporary replacement until after the upcoming elections, but no progress has been made. Meanwhile, the appointment of the next commander of the Judea and Samaria Division has also been deferred. A recent IDF staff meeting failed to finalize the decision, postponing it until the new Central Command chief is selected. Although Brigadier General Kobi Heller is praised for his current performance, military officials stress the need for a formal appointment process due to the sensitivity of the position.
The military describes the situation in the West Bank as extremely volatile and dangerous, with 26 battalions currently deployed to reinforce the area. A senior security official indicated that a large-scale operation targeting terror infrastructure and inciters is likely to be delayed until after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's upcoming visit to the United States. These developments come amid a recent shooting attack at Gilad Farm and a stabbing near Elon Moreh, underscoring the region's instability.
