IDF Chief of Staff to Appoint Dudu Bar-Klipa as Next Central Command Chief

The Israeli military chief of staff, Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, is expected to announce Maj. Gen. Dudu Bar-Klipa as the next commander of the IDF's Central Command on Monday, according to senior military sources. Bar-Klipa, currently serving as the head of the Manpower Directorate (AKA), previously commanded Division 36 during the war.

The announcement comes amid some surprise within the military's upper ranks, as Lt. Gen. Zamir had previously stated that senior officer appointments would be postponed until 2027 due to the upcoming elections. This policy led to the appointment of an interim head for the Civil Administration rather than a permanent one.

Last week, Brig. Gen. (res.) Ilan Malka was appointed interim head of the Civil Administration, replacing Brig. Gen. Hisham Ibrahim, who became the military secretary to the Defense Minister. Bar-Klipa's appointment to lead the Central Command, a significant role, appears to deviate from the stated policy of delaying senior appointments.

This development follows a controversial public announcement by Defense Minister Israel Katz on Channel 14's "The Patriots" program last week, stating his intention to dismiss the current Central Command chief, Maj. Gen. Avi Blot. The minister's statement, made live on air, caused widespread public outcry and drew strong reactions from political, military, and civilian sectors.

Following Katz's televised remarks, the IDF spokesperson issued a statement clarifying that the Defense Minister's comments were not coordinated with the chief of staff and that Lt. Gen. Zamir had no intention of replacing Maj. Gen. Blot. The IDF affirmed its full confidence in Blot's professional, courageous, and sacrificial leadership in the complex reality of the Central Command. The military reiterated that no key command changes would be made during this sensitive period unless initiated and approved by the chief of staff according to established procedures.

However, the Defense Minister's office stated that as early as late April, Lt. Gen. Zamir had recommended Maj. Gen. Bar-Klipa for the Central Command role and had requested an interview with him. Defense Minister Katz subsequently interviewed Bar-Klipa in June and was reportedly impressed, deeming him the most suitable candidate for the position.
