Defense Minister Israel Katz Advances Appointment of Dado Bar-Kalifa as Central Command Chief

Defense Minister Israel Katz has decided to promote Major General Dado Bar-Kalifa to serve as the next commander of the IDF's Central Command, succeeding Major General Avi Blot. This decision follows a recommendation from the Chief of Staff and a personal discussion between Katz and Bar-Kalifa, who initially declined the position. Katz convinced Bar-Kalifa to accept the role, and the appointment process will proceed soon.

Bar-Kalifa is expected to assume command during a particularly challenging period marked by increased threats from the east, potential leadership changes within the Palestinian Authority, and the Israeli government's plans to significantly expand Jewish settlements in the West Bank. Additionally, he will face ongoing threats from Arab terrorism endangering Israeli civilians.

The Central Command under Bar-Kalifa will continue an aggressive policy against terror hubs in northern Samaria, including clearing terrorist camps and maintaining operational control, a strategy supported by Katz and Prime Minister Netanyahu despite previous opposition from former Chief of Staff Herzl Halevi and some IDF leaders. According to Shin Bet data, these offensive operations have reduced terrorism in the area by about 80%, though attacks such as stone-throwing and assaults on shepherds have increased elsewhere.

Bar-Kalifa is regarded within the IDF as a leader of the "Decisive Generation," known for his offensive command style demonstrated during the recent Gaza war as head of the 36th Division. His leadership is expected to intensify pressure on Arab terrorist organizations, continue the clearing of terror camps, and strengthen security and settlement efforts in Judea and Samaria.

The appointment is seen as highly significant given the complex operational and political challenges facing Central Command in the coming years.
