Mother of Fallen Israeli Officer Shares Journey From Grief to Mission on 20th Lebanon War Anniversary

Twenty years after the death of Lieutenant Colonel Benya Rein in the Second Lebanon War, his mother, Hagit Rein, spoke at a memorial ceremony reflecting on her journey from mourning to a mission of societal strengthening. Benya Rein had founded the "Benya Force" for rescuing wounded soldiers and supplying troops, earning a Chief of Staff citation. Hagit described how the initial year after her son's death was dominated by pain, but over time she learned to live alongside it, drawing strength from faith and the belief that her son remains present in spirit.

Hagit shared that Benya’s will, written during a trip to Poland, has guided her to continue his legacy of giving, humility, and responsibility toward the community. Without any organizational backing, she has spent years speaking to soldiers, students, and youth across Israel, leaving a lasting impact. She recounted encounters where her messages influenced school principals and encouraged wounded reservists to continue serving.

She also highlighted how Benya’s siblings continue the family tradition of service through reserve duty and community contribution. Reflecting on the ongoing conflict, Hagit noted that the IDF has returned to the same area in Lebanon where Benya fought, expressing hope that such fighting will not recur. She thanked family, friends, commanders, the IDF, and the public for their support over the years. Shortly before the memorial, she received a call from the commander of the 36th Division, who had visited the site of Benya’s death to recite the Kaddish and sing "Hatikvah" with his soldiers. Hagit concluded by wishing healing to the wounded and acknowledging the family’s ongoing celebrations amid their loss.
