IDF Orders Freeze on All Non-Official Social Media Accounts Ahead of Israeli Elections

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has issued a new directive to suspend all digital activity on its social media accounts except for officially sanctioned ones. The order, signed by IDF Spokesperson Brigadier General Effi Dafrin, restricts activity to official IDF accounts and those of its main branches and commands, excluding divisions, brigades, and staff units. This move aims to ensure message consistency and maintain state neutrality during the upcoming Knesset elections.

The directive follows concerns over unauthorized and unmonitored social media accounts created within various IDF frameworks, which have led to inconsistencies and public controversies. Dafrin noted that any exceptions to the freeze must receive approval solely from the IDF Spokesperson's office.

Recent incidents prompting the directive include a scandal involving an IDF spokesperson soldier photographed with social media influencer Brayden Peters, known as "Clavicular," who was filmed dancing in Miami to a Kanye West song containing samples of Hitler speeches. The soldier, who managed international communication social media accounts, was given a suspended sentence and reassigned.

Another controversy involved a popular influencer posting a video dancing in IDF uniform at a recruitment festival booth called the "Beauty Booth," which was set up without proper authorization. The video was removed following criticism, and the IDF clarified that the booth and the soldiers' behavior did not reflect IDF values or the event's purpose.

These incidents have underscored the need for tighter control over IDF social media presence, especially during sensitive political periods.
