Jordan Intercepts Iranian Missiles Amid US Strikes and Regional Tensions

The Jordanian military announced on Wednesday that its air defense systems successfully intercepted five advanced missiles launched from Iran into Jordanian territory. No casualties were reported in this rare and significant escalation in the region. Concurrently, Iranian-affiliated media reported a major US military strike targeting strategic locations on the Iranian islands of Qeshm, Abu Musa, and Kish, as well as other sites in Bushehr province. The US aircraft reportedly operated from bases in Kuwait.

In response to the US-Saudi strikes, a pro-Iranian militia commander in Iraq warned of a severe military retaliation within 72 hours. These militias are coordinating closely with other pro-Iranian groups, including the Houthi rebels in Yemen, raising concerns about the conflict spreading across the Middle East.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia is actively working to form a broad international naval coalition to protect shipping in the Red Sea from ongoing Houthi attacks. Negotiations involve dozens of countries, though the coalition's final composition has not been decided. This initiative follows Houthi threats to impose a maritime blockade on Saudi Arabia, which Riyadh denies. Saudi forces recently launched proportional strikes against Houthi targets at the port of Hodeidah in retaliation for attacks on Saudi vessels.

These developments come amid a backdrop of escalating US-Saudi operations against pro-Iranian militias in Iraq, which have reportedly killed around 20 Iranian Revolutionary Guard advisers. US President Donald Trump has publicly held Iran responsible for the militias' actions and threatened strong military retaliation, stating, "We will hit them very hard. They know it’s coming and can’t do anything about it." The entire region remains on edge with the potential for further escalation looming.
