Jordan Intercepts Iranian Missiles Amid Rising US-Iran Tensions in Middle East

The conflict between the United States and Iran is intensifying across the Middle East, with Jordan emerging as a key battleground. On Monday evening, the Jordanian military intercepted three Iranian missiles after air raid sirens sounded due to detected threats in Jordanian airspace. According to Jordan's official news agency, there were no casualties or property damage. This missile attack follows days of repeated Iranian strikes targeting US forces stationed in Jordan, raising concerns about further regional escalation.

The missile interceptions were recorded over the city of Irbid, with a fourth missile falling in a remote southern area without causing harm. Two days earlier, Jordanian Air Force jets shot down four drones that breached its airspace. Jordan has faced nearly continuous attacks since the US-Iran conflict reignited, with dozens of missiles launched at the kingdom and its air defenses successfully intercepting multiple ballistic missile barrages from Iran. Iranian forces have increasingly targeted bases hosting American troops, aiming to inflict casualties and deter US military expansion in the region.

The deadliest recent strike hit the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, killing two US soldiers and leaving another missing. Since the conflict began, 17 US soldiers have died and around 430 have been wounded. US President Donald Trump vowed severe retaliation, stating on his social media platform Truth Social that "every time Iran kills an American soldier, it will pay many times over." He directed Defense Secretary Mark Esper, Joint Chiefs Chairman General Mark Milley, and all military commanders to respond, though he did not specify the nature of the retaliation.

Meanwhile, Iran reported airstrikes on industrial sites near Khomain and Shiraz, which Iranian officials blamed on the US, though Washington did not claim responsibility. These attacks followed nine consecutive nights of US airstrikes on Iranian military and strategic targets. Additionally, Iranian missile and drone attacks targeted US forces in Kuwait and Bahrain, where alarms were triggered and attempts were made to strike civilian aviation infrastructure.

The conflict also extended to the Strait of Hormuz, where two ships were attacked near Oman and the UAE, with Iran's Revolutionary Guards claiming responsibility. Despite the military escalation, diplomatic efforts continue, with Iran's Interior Minister visiting Pakistan to revive a collapsed ceasefire and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo expressing willingness to negotiate if talks are genuine. However, on the ground, both sides continue to expand their attacks.
