Tensions Escalate as Iran Fires 10 Missiles at Jordanian Airbase Amid US Strikes
Following two nights of US airstrikes and Iranian retaliatory attacks in the Gulf region, the conflict intensified on Thursday afternoon with Iran launching 10 missiles toward Jordan. The missiles targeted the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, which hosts American forces. The US Embassy in Amman warned its staff to take immediate shelter and remain indoors due to reports of missiles, drones, or rockets in Jordanian airspace.
Iranian media also reported missile strikes on the Ali Al Salem Air Base and port area in Kuwait. The Jordanian military intercepted eight missiles, confirming no casualties or material damage. Iran's Revolutionary Guards issued a statement threatening renewed attacks on US bases in the region if American aggression continues. Concurrently, Iranian sources reported explosions near the Bushehr nuclear reactor and other southern cities including Kerman, Bandar Abbas, and Kermanshah, alongside unverified claims of attacks on US naval vessels in the Persian Gulf.
Over the past two days, the US has targeted more than 170 Iranian military sites, including air defense systems, drone and missile storage, naval assets, and logistical infrastructure along Iran’s coastline. This marks the largest US strike campaign in Iran since the start of the year, with new targets including strategic railway bridges used for trade with Russia and China. One such bridge, Ak-Taqa Khan, is part of the China-Turkmenistan-Iran rail corridor and has seen a tripling of freight traffic since last November.
The escalation coincides with the funeral of Iran’s former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s father in Mashhad, where thousands gathered amid heightened tensions. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards also warned that US military adventurism in the Strait of Hormuz would provoke a strong response and disrupt regional navigation.
In response to US strikes, Iran launched drone attacks on US Patriot missile systems in Kuwait, fuel depots in Bahrain, and early warning sites in Qatar, which is mediating negotiations. Iranian forces vowed to continue defending the Islamic Revolution’s ideals with full force until final victory.
A security source in Israel expressed confidence that the conflict would not spill over into Israeli territory despite the regional escalation.
