US Expands Patriot Missile Production Amid Iran Tensions and Ukraine Conflict

The United States has decided to increase production of Patriot missiles due to concerns over depleting ammunition stocks amid ongoing conflicts in Iran and Ukraine. The Pentagon awarded Lockheed Martin a contract worth up to $58.6 billion for manufacturing Patriot interceptors from 2026 to 2032, expanding a previous agreement signed in April. This move aims to significantly accelerate missile production after the US supplied large quantities of weapons to allies and used its own missile inventory in recent military operations in Iran.

The Trump administration has recently pressured defense companies to prioritize expanding production capacity over shareholder profits. Lockheed Martin plans to triple its PAC-3 MSE interceptor output by the end of the decade to about 2,000 missiles annually and increase its workforce at its Arkansas plant by approximately 50%. The company will also invest $8 to $9 billion by 2030 to upgrade more than 20 manufacturing sites across the US.

Simultaneously, the Pentagon is advancing similar production agreements with RTX to dramatically increase Tomahawk cruise missile manufacturing. According to the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), the US military currently has fewer than 1,000 Patriot interceptors and fewer than 250 THAAD interceptors, two key air defense systems heavily used in the Middle East recently. This expansion reflects the US effort to replenish and strengthen its missile defense capabilities amid heightened global tensions.
