Judge Noam Solberg Criticizes Democratic Party for Unequal Media Access During Primaries

Judge Noam Solberg, chairman of Israel's Central Elections Committee and Deputy President of the Supreme Court, issued a sharp rebuke to the Democratic Party for denying access to a Channel 14 reporter during the party's primary elections. The incident occurred last week when Abraham Hasson, a Channel 14 correspondent, was blocked from covering the Democratic Party primaries led by Yair Golan.

In an urgent letter sent to representatives of various political parties, Solberg emphasized the importance of granting equal media access to all journalists during election events, including press conferences, tours, primaries, and campaign headquarters. He stressed that the right to information belongs not to journalists themselves but to the public they serve, stating, "A journalist who is denied entry is not left outside alone, the public they serve is left outside with them."

While encouraging parties to act fairly and provide equal coverage opportunities, Solberg clarified that his letter does not constitute a legal ruling. He also referenced a previous committee decision related to a petition against the Meretz party, reinforcing the call for equitable media access. The letter aims to ensure transparency and fairness in election coverage ahead of the upcoming Knesset elections.
